Did you know that we offer a physiotherapy service for babies with various conditions?
Today we are going to focus on Plagiocephaly (Flat Head) and how physiotherapy can help.
In the first year of life, a baby’s body grows and changes faster than at any other time. Early movement experiences — tummy time, rolling, sitting, and reaching — play a vital role in shaping posture, strength, and motor development.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll take you step by step through the role of physiotherapy in baby development, highlighting common concerns we see in our clinic and how early support can make a big difference.
The Most Common Concern We See: Plagiocephaly (Flat Head)
One of the most common reasons parents bring their babies to us is plagiocephaly, often referred to as flat head syndrome. This happens when a baby’s soft skull develops a flattened area, usually from spending too much time lying in one position.
***Plagiocephaly is very common and treatable, especially when addressed early***

How does flat head develop?
- A baby’s preference to turn the head to one side
- Limited neck movement (often linked with torticollis)
- Reduced tummy time
- Long periods spent in car seats, swings, or bouncers
How Physiotherapy can help?
A paediatric physiotherapist assesses your baby’s head shape, neck movement, posture, and overall development.
Treatment focuses on:
- Improving neck mobility and strength
- Encouraging symmetrical movement and positioning
- Guiding parents on tummy time and play activities
- Providing practical advice for everyday handling and positioning
Will my baby be left with permanent changes?
In most cases, early physiotherapy can significantly improve head shape and prevent further flattening, often avoiding the need for more invasive interventions later.
Why Early Support Matters
A baby’s skull is most responsive to change in the early months. Addressing plagiocephaly early not only supports head shape but also promotes healthy motor development, comfort, and symmetry as your baby grows.
